Cost guide

How much does it cost to flush a tankless water heater?

National cost guides put a professional tankless flush between $150 and $350. HomeGuide gives that full span, while Angi and HomeAdvisor both say $150–$250. We found no reputable Utah-specific flush price, so treat these as national ranges, not a quote.

Most homeowners can expect a professional tankless flush to land somewhere between $150 and $350, based on three national cost guides. Doing it yourself costs less per visit after you buy a kit, but carries warranty risk. Below are the ranges, where they disagree, and what pushes a job toward the high or low end.

Three cost guides, two ranges

Source Professional tankless flush Also reports
HomeGuide (2026) $150–$350 A tank-style flush for comparison: $75–$150
Angi (2026 data) $150–$250 An average of $200; tankless costs $75 to $100 more to flush than a tank
HomeAdvisor (2026) $150–$250 A flush kit for DIY at $100–$120

All three agree on the bottom of the range. They differ at the top, where HomeGuide’s ceiling is higher. None of the guides explains the gap in detail. A fair reading is that the higher end covers longer or more involved jobs, which the factors further down describe.

If you want one line to remember, use Angi’s average of $200 as a midpoint and HomeGuide’s top figure as a ceiling for a plain flush.

Why a tankless flush costs more than a tank flush

A tank water heater stores water, and its flush is mostly about draining sediment out of the bottom of the tank. HomeGuide puts that job at $75–$150.

A tankless heater has no tank to drain. Its scale sits inside the heat exchanger, the narrow tubes where the burner heats your water. Removing it means:

  • shutting the heater off from the house with isolation valves,
  • hooking a small pump and hoses to the service ports,
  • circulating a descaling solution through the heat exchanger,
  • rinsing it out with fresh water and cleaning the inlet filter.

That takes more equipment and more time, which is why Angi says tankless flushes run $75 to $100 higher.

What a DIY flush costs

Item DIY Professional
Pump, hoses and bucket HomeGuide: $100–$300 for a kit with solution. HomeAdvisor: $100–$120 for the pump, hose and bucket Brought by the technician
Descaling solution White vinegar at $3–$6 per gallon, per HomeAdvisor Included in the price
Each later flush Mostly the cost of solution, since the pump and hoses are reusable $150–$350 each time, per HomeGuide

The amount of solution depends on your brand. Rinnai’s manual calls for four gallons of undiluted, food-grade white vinegar, while Rheem’s calls for 2 gallons of food-grade white vinegar. So your vinegar bill per flush can double from one brand to the next.

The kit pays for itself over a few years only if the flush goes right every time. Navien warns that incorrect descaling could void the warranty. Our DIY vs professional guide compares each brand’s procedure and explains when DIY makes sense.

What changes the price of a professional flush

These are the things that usually move a quote up or down. None of them comes with a published dollar figure, so ask the technician how each one affects yours.

  • Missing isolation valves. If your heater has none, they have to be added before the flush. That is plumbing work and is normally priced separately. See isolation valves.
  • How much scale has built up. Rheem’s manual says to circulate vinegar for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on mineral build-up and water hardness. A heater that has gone years without a flush can take longer.
  • What’s included. Some quotes cover only the flush. Others add cleaning the inlet filter, checking codes and inspecting the venting and condensate line.
  • A fault that needs diagnosis. If the heater shows an error code that isn’t a simple reminder, the visit may become a repair call. Angi puts plumber labor at $45–$200 per hour.
  • Access. A heater in a tight closet, an attic or an outdoor box can take longer to hook up.
  • Bundling. A flush done as part of a full yearly visit may be priced differently from a one-off.

Flush vs full annual maintenance

A flush is the main part of yearly upkeep, but not all of it. HomeGuide estimates the average annual maintenance cost, including flushing, filter replacement and minor repairs, at:

Heater type HomeGuide average annual maintenance
Gas tankless $150–$650
Electric tankless $150–$600

The wide top end reflects years when a small part needs replacing. HomeGuide puts minor repairs at $50–$300. The annual tankless maintenance page lists what a full visit covers beyond the flush.

What skipping flushes can cost

Scale damage to the heat exchanger is one of the costliest things that can happen to a tankless heater, and warranties rarely cover it. Rheem’s limited warranty, for example, says damage caused by lime, mineral build-up, or scale is excluded. HomeGuide puts a replacement heat exchanger at $600–$1,300, which is the price of several flushes at the national range. For the warranty wording of each brand, see tankless warranties and scale.

Is there a Utah price?

We looked for a reputable Utah or Salt Lake City price for a tankless flush and did not find one. The only Utah-specific cost figures we found are HomeBlue’s Salt Lake City estimates for installing a whole heater, and those date from January 2022. They tell you nothing about flush pricing.

Some local plumbers post their own flush prices. Those are single-company offers, not survey data, so we don’t list them here. The technician serving your area sets the price for your job and confirms it when you book. Utah’s hard water can mean more frequent flushes, so the cost per year may matter more than the cost per visit. Our guide on how often to flush covers that.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Is the price a flat rate or hourly, and is there a trip charge?
  • Does it include cleaning the inlet filter and checking error codes?
  • Does my heater have isolation valves, and if not, what does adding them cost?
  • What solution will you use, and does it match my manufacturer’s procedure?
  • Will I get a dated record of the service for my warranty file?

When you’re ready, book a tankless flush and descale and ask these questions when you call.

Common questions

How much does a tankless flush cost in Utah?

We could not find a reputable Utah-specific figure. The national guides say $150–$350 (HomeGuide) and $150–$250 (Angi and HomeAdvisor). The technician serving your area confirms the actual price when you book.

Why does flushing a tankless heater cost more than a tank heater?

The work is different. A tank flush mostly drains sediment out of the tank. A tankless flush circulates a descaling solution through the heat exchanger with a pump, then rinses it out. Angi says tankless flushes cost $75 to $100 more than tank flushes.

Is a DIY flush kit worth buying?

It can pay off over several years if your heater already has isolation valves and you follow the manual. HomeGuide prices a kit at $100–$300. Weigh that against Navien's warning that incorrect descaling could void the warranty.

Is a flush included in annual maintenance pricing?

HomeGuide's annual maintenance estimate for a gas tankless heater, $150–$650, includes flushing, filter replacement and minor repairs. The flush-only ranges from the cost guides sit in the lower part of that span.

What does it cost if I never flush?

Scale damage is excluded by most tankless warranties, so you pay for it yourself. HomeGuide puts a heat exchanger replacement at $600–$1,300.
